Delaware Defeats Field Hockey in Two Rounds of Penalty Strokes, 4-3

NEWARK, Del. – After two overtimes and a round of penalty strokes, the University of Delaware field hockey team defeated Syracuse University during the second round of penalty strokes. Delaware won, 4-3 and improved to 2-2, while the SU fell to 1-2.
Offensively, the Orange dominated the game, outshooting the Fightin’ Blue Hens, 19-11. SU also had a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners.
“We dominated the game but could not put the ball into the cage,” associate head coach Mary McCracken said. “We missed the cage too many times during the penalty stroke rounds. It was a great game and we never quit. We played hard and we are proud of the way we played, just not satisfied.”
On the first round of penalty strokes, both teams had four players score. During the second round SU was unable to find the back of the cage. Katie Stroke scored the deciding goal for Delaware.
Casey Howard put the Blue Hens up 1-0 when she deflected Amada Warrington’s penalty corner shot into the cage. Sophomore forward Brittany Shannon (Ronks, Pa.) evened the game at, 1-1, scoring from 10 yards out on the left side. Junior forward Jessica Lerew (York Springs, Pa.) was credited with an assist on the play.
Delaware took at 2-1 lead when Rachael Schexnayder put home a loose ball in front of SU’s cage. Senior back Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa.) tied the game at, 2-2, off a penalty corner in the 44th minute. Seniors Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) and Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa.) provided the assists on the set play.
Casey Howard’s second goal of the day gave the Blue Hens a 3-2 advantage, but a break away goal by sophomore forward Alison Babbitt (Spencer, N.Y.) knotted the game up at 3-3.
Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) made two saves on the afternoon for Syracuse. Megan Allen and Nikki Rhoades combined to three saves for Delaware.
SU will play at Quinnipiac on Thursday, September 7 at 3 p.m.
